Behavioral Interviewing for Administrators
In the early 1990s, Dan Korem developed the first comprehensive system for
profiling people on the spot that didn’t use a written test. In his book, The
Art of Profiling—Reading People Right the First Time, Korem presented
the Korem Profiling System, which enables one in a few minutes of
interaction to identify how a person is likely to:

While human resource managers regularly use
behavioral profiling instruments such as the Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator to
profile candidates when hiring personnel, a need emerged for a system that didn’t
use a written test. As a result, professionals from most Fortune 500 companies
have received training on the Korem Profiling System. Education
administrators then requested training to improve hiring and team management
skills. Additionally, administrators, faced with increasing attrition rates and
a shrinking pool of education candidates, requested that they learn how to
conduct a behavioral interview when hiring personnel—the standard
interview method used by major companies, but never taught to administrative
educators because of the cost (typically $1500 per person). Korem &

Imagine the following scenario: A corporate trainer must conduct two classes on
management skills. One for auditors and another for marketing professionals.
Additionally, the trainer decides to use the exact same approach and examples
when instructing both groups of professionals. Do you think the instructor will
be able to successfully hold the attention of each group and enhance each
group’s comprehension and retention? The obvious answer is: No. Audit
and marketing professionals are different folks with different needs and communication styles. Well, the same is true in our schools. Every class takes
on its own unique personality. For example, some classes have a more
conventional flavor (like a group of auditors), while others prefer to be a bit
more freewheeling (like those in marketing). Yet, many teachers will instruct
each class of students in the exact same manner.
Without effective behavioral profiling skills,
teachers are unable to effectively read each class’s profile and custom tailor
lessons appropriately. They must simply operate out of their intuition, which is
typically less accurate than applying a verifiable skill. Additionally, nearly
40 million of the 64 million youths in America have one of the classic family
at-risk factors, such as divorce, physical abuse, and so on. This social
deterioration is driving the desire for more personal attention from teachers to
teach me, not just the text. Which is why thousands of teachers have
asked for this training.

Protector Strategy
In the mid-1980s, Dan Korem predicted the appearance of gangs in suburbs, small
towns and affluent communities—an unprecedented trend in US history. Seven
years of research resulted in his critically acclaimed text, Suburban
Gangs—The Affluent Rebels, which has been used as curriculum at
over 100 universities. Korem also identified what is believed to be the only
strategy that actually stops gangs from forming—The Missing Protector
Strategy (MPS). When applied to over 400 severely at-risk youths over a
period of six years in a neighborhood over-run with gangs, not one youth joined
a gang. The MPS is also the number one deterrent to teen suicide, a key
factor for deterring chronic drug use, and most educators believe that the MPS
strategy will also reduce teen pregnancy and significantly improve the class

A WORD ABOUT BEHAVIORAL PROFILING
With the rise in new forms of crime, law enforcement agencies often attempt to
predict who is most likely to commit a crime or who is currently engaged in
criminal activity. Efforts to profile these individuals has at
times been very successful. There have been some cases, however, in which people
are solely identified based upon ethnicity, the car
they drive, their license plate prefix, and so on. This is not behavioral
profiling but stereotyping. And, some of these attempts have
resulted in lawsuits. The Korem Profiling System only promotes
true behavioral profiling and never stereotyping. Additionally, many
"warning lists" have appeared that attempt to identify youths who
might commit a random act of violence. Similarly, some of these lists may also
prompt lawsuits and should only be referenced with extreme caution.
The behavioral profiling strategies used in the
Korem Profiling System are sound and are regularly used by Fortune 500
professionals when hiring personnel and managing teams. Additionally, there are
many well-accepted behavioral profiling instruments that are regularly used by
major corporations and school districts when hiring personnel profile.
Therefore, it is imperative that districts avoid stereotyping
and not confuse stereotyping with behavioral profiling.
Related to behavioral profiling and safety
issues, noted legal experts warn that school districts face exposure to law
suits because their staffs are not properly trained. This has resulted in
many cases in which students have been inappropriately suspended or expelled—in
some cases, for simply writing a scary Halloween story at the direction of a
teacher. When the Korem Profiling System has been applied in
school districts, the following has been the result: 1) Over 20,000 educators
and law enforcement officers have received training and not one lawsuit has been
filed nor complaint from a parent, care-giver, or student. 2) Threatening
situations have been thwarted without violation of civil rights.
